Foundation of Knowledge
As professionals experienced with the USMLE, we are cognizant that a proper foundation is essential for success. Remember, the process of obtaining a medical license was divided among three exams for a reason.
o Step 1 presumes an understanding of the basics of medicine including anatomy, pathophysiology, microbiology, pharmacology, pathology, etc. and tests on these concepts.
o Step 2CK applies the knowledge acquired from Step 1 onto the core rotations of medical school’s third year. The focus of this exam is on the “next step in management” AFTER preliminary conceptualization of the clinical case.
o Step 2CS is a critical, yet underemphasized, component of the medical licensing process. This examination underscores your clinical abilities in a patient interaction: the basis of your future career.
o Step 3 is the most underestimated of the aforementioned examinations. Due to misleading advice from fellow residents, physicians, and forums, there is a common theme of inadequate preparation. Step 3 assesses your clinical management abilities beyond the “next step”. To the NBME, this test best represents your abilities as a practicing physician.
o Step 3CCS appraises your ability to manage a patient presenting to your office or the emergency department. You are expected to perform an appropriate physical exam, order the necessary tests and treatments, and manage the patient properly until the case ends.
Have you thought to yourself: "Why do I have difficulty with the USMLE?"
· The answer is two-fold:
o 1. You have not followed the schematic in the order detailed above.
§ We emphasize learning and understanding of medical concepts over memorization.
§ This allows retention of the knowledge for future examinations.
o 2. You did not begin studying at the appropriate time with the correct resources. When is the best time to start studying for Step 1?
§ You will hearing conflicting answers on this issue, but the answer is Day 1 of medical school.
